My boys Codiac and GNRLMTR out of Boston, alongside a crack team of musicians, artists, and organizers have been working hard on bring the best in electronic music to Boston for a week in April. That week has finally arrived so you better put your party kilt on. Together celebrates electronic music, art, and technology with tons of events during the week of April 2nd – 8th. Dubfire, Nero, Photek, RJD2, Dillon Francis, and tons of others will be tickling your ears all week. But that’s not all, the festival is a fully rounded event comprised of daytime panels, demonstrations and exhibitions in addition to the expansive nighttime line-up of musicians and parties. First heard this track in Pearson Sound’s Fabriclive 56. This Shangaan Electro: New Wave Dance Music From South Africa is super bubbly on the whole and will definitely get you bouncing for the summer (yes, I do realize it’s only January but a boy can dream).

The Together Festival is a week-long (April 18th-24th) series of events in Greater Boston showcasing music, art and technology by uniting the surrounding communities and beyond. My boy DJ Codiac (purveyor of the delicious dub radio show SUBduction on sub.fm) has been hard at work with the Together crew to bring an unbelievable lineup to Boston including: Trentmoller, Pantha du Prince, Switch, Anton Pieete, Mary Anne Hobbs, Take, Mike Slott, Lorn, Future Rock, Ramadanman, Egyptrixx and many more noteworthy names. The festival includes a daytime event schedule that includes discussion panels, technology demonstrations, art installations, a tradeshow/expo, and film screenings. Looks like second time around is a charm for this annual event series in Boston. Boston gets Together!

Yuck is a band of English youngsters that sound like a fuzzier and more grown-up version of the Midwest emo I grew up listening to. Despite this being a fairly new album, it evokes sense memory of driving around the suburbs, drinking a limited-edition orange Mountain Dew. It’s perfect music for an unseasonably warm day like today.

As if earthquakes, Libyan revolts, horrific bus accidents weren’t enough, the world lost one of the smoothest voices to ever grace the records of hip hop today. Nathaniel “Nate Dogg” Hale passed away at 41. The man turned so many ordinary hip hop tracks into bangers just by laying his vocals on the hook. While “Regulate” (featuring Warren G) will undoubtedly get some extended airplay today I wanted to pay tribute to Nate Dogg by playing the first track I ever heard his voice on. Probably not the most appropriate thing for an 11 year old white kid to be listening to what with the vulgar language and slightly (extremely) degrading image it paints about women. But to me, that’s kind of the thing that made Nate Dogg so unique. It didn’t really matter what he was singing or saying – it just always sounded good. RIP Nate. Pourin’ one out for you.

Last weekend I was in Florida sitting on the beach as the sun was setting when I queued up Diamond Messages’ Smoke and Mirrors EP. The track Liquid Summer mixes together a chill hip-hop beat with ambient guitars, angelic female vocals, and xylophones (my favorite childhood instrument). Basically its like musical crack to me. I didn’t even make it to track 2 of the EP because I must have listened to this one fifteen times until the sun finally set. If the winter blues has you down – put on a good pair of headphones, queue up this track, then close your eyes. I guarantee that after 40 seconds you’ll feel like its summertime …

Diamond Messages – Liquid Summer

“This ain’t your daddy’s Chillwave” is what I would say if I was a huge asshole. Vondelpark‘s “Backflip (In The Sauna)” is not chillwave, but is incredibly chill. The part when those big hip-hop drums come in after the song spends its first minute and a half building up is really something special.

This young man’s “Sauna EP” came out a few months ago on R&S Records, home of some chill music heavy-hitters. Get it here.

Everyone keeps complaining about this precious hour of sleep they lost last night. So here’s a really great sleeper by Chicago melody-maker Young Man. I know you’re tired, but with lulling strums like these, it’s not so bad being sleepy.

This is some great shoegazey chillwavey music coming from the forever-spring-and-summer streets of San Francisco. It’s by this band Blackbird Blackbird. Oh, also, they did a fucking mix of a Pavement song!

Brooklyn’s Kingdom takes on Jacques Greene‘s “Tell Me” and sprinkles a bit of his own flavor on what was already a hot track. The end result is a club-friendly house cut that bumps and grinds like a boss.

Jacques Greene – Tell Me (Kingdom Edit)

At 4 in the morning, I’m finishing an unnecessary old-fashioned with my friend at a bar with 2 other people: the bartender and the DJ. So we ask the bartender what the current song is, and he points us to the DJ: an overzealous fellow with a gut, a prospector’s mustache, and suspenders. “Arthur Russell, King of New York”. Apparently Russell was a bigwig in the 70′s nyc underground (which i imagine looked a lot like David Bowie’s Labyrinth) and kind of served as a godfather to disco getting weird and becoming dance music for the next couple decades. He has a couple of monikers, make sure to check out Loose Joints for some bangers.

UK-based producer Zomby is a weird dude. It seems like he spends most days as a hermit— straight blunted and cranking out whatever the hell kind of tune he feels like at any given moment. Sometimes they’re rave-roots nostalgic garage/hardcore bangers. Other times super minimal 8-bit dubstep tracks that sound like your NES on cough syrup.

Every once in a while he drops a gem like “Natalia’s Song”. Admittedly, this dark and moody Burial-esque side of Zomby’s is without a doubt my favorite. I heard this first when Mary Anne Hobbs snuck it into her last radio show last year and it’s become somewhat of an instant-repeat jam for me.

As far as I know this track is currently unreleased, but make sure to check out all of Zomby’s other releases (especially Where Were U in ’92).

Zomby – Natalia’s Song

Today I bring you two of the latest tracks for the absurdly talented producer Joy Orbison. While his music always blurred across subgenres, his latest EP takes a marked step back from the dubstep vibe he’d been cultivating in earlier releases in favor of a heavily nuanced four to the floor house sound.

Apologies on the quality, both tracks were ripped from Benji B’s radio show. You can grab this EP in March (3/14) on Hotflush Records.

Tyler the Creator is one of the rawest and grimiest rappers I’ve ever heard. I was at first put off by the rapey lyrics from his other songs, but then I realized: I listen to rap songs about murder and selling crack because the songs have such gnarly beats, so why not rap songs about other awful things? It’s not really fair to be exclusive about what kinds of abominations I hear in rap lyrics.

This kid gets a lot of comparisons to Insane Clown Posse and other “horror rap” because of his subject matter, but I think those comparisons are completely unfounded. Unlike them, he makes it sound good.

Yonkers is from Tyler’s upcoming album Goblin. When it comes out, I’m sure you’ll be able to get it here.

Computer Magic is this girl writing electropop on her laptop in one of those attic bedrooms with lights and lanterns strung across the ceiling and this poster on the wall. Maybe i made part (all) of that up, but it’ll fit once you hear the tracks. Her 2010 EPs are filled with odd and understated disco beats with vocals that sound like films of old vacations. Check her out.

Memoryhouse made a name for themselves writing soothing droney ambient music that warms just enough for it to feel like pop. But Heirloom is definitely a pop song; under a few layers of sea-soaked guitars there’s a Fleetwood Mac tune humming its way out.

Jamie XX remixed Gil Scott-Heron‘s 2010 album “I’m New Here“. When I first heard that, I thought “who cares?”. I hadn’t really listened much to either one.

This album isn’t even out yet and it’s an album-of-the-year contender. Holy crap. “Running”, like many of tracks on “We’re New Here” is a heavy head-nodder that would feel just as comfortable up in the club as it would in your headphones at work. Also, as someone who makes music, that bass drum sound kind of gives me a boner.

Gil Scott-Heron & Jamie XX – Running.

Don’t ask me why, but the other day I was searching Google for the correct spelling of “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” which then led me in the direction of Pogo’s Marry Poppins video remix titled “Expialidocious”. Pogo (Nick Bertke) has made a career out of splicing together dreamy chords, smooth basslines, and vocal samples from Disney movies and now is embarking on a World Remix project in which he will live-action remix all the sights and sounds from different cultures. Sounds like fun. 6-0-2 is the life!

Pogo – Expialidocious (Disney Remix)

According to Lifter Puller‘s singer Craig Finn, “In 1991, I went to a Grateful Dead show at Nassau Coliseum. Supposedly, it was the biggest drug bust in Grateful Dead history. The kid I was with threw up on me and started freaking out, so we had to cruise during the second set. I took him to see Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II so he could calm down. It finally worked, after a lot of heavy breathing and concern for Donotello’s welfare.”

For this song, he fudged the story a little bit to make it about a young lady with whom he would like to bone. Regardless of narrative veracity, this is an emotionally gripping 6 minutes that will make you feel feelings big time.

Thank you, Based God. Lil B gets a lot of shit, and a lot of love for being such a weirdo. He’s technically not that good of a rapper but he has an extraordinary style and flow.

“Motivation”, from Lil B’s “Angels Exodus”, is one of his more compelling tracks. In said song, he’s going out of his way to say that he’s not a goofy joke – he’s for real and going to be around for a while.

Those Glaswegian scaps Mogwai have anew album “Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will”. If you like Mogwai, you’ll like this song from that very long-titled album.

If you aren’t familiar with Mogwai, you’ll still probably like this song. It’s instrumental, has some really heavy riffs and sounds extra fantastic in headphones. And if this song doesn’t sway you, this one might.

If you, the reader, and I were in my dorm room listening to The Creek Drank the Cradle seven years ago and you said “Someday Iron & Wine is going to use a wah-wah pedal and have a horn section,” I’d have called you a gosh-darn liar.

The new Iron and Wine album reminds me of Steve Miller Band and Steely Dan — in a good way. It still has the beautiful hushed Sam Beam vocals, but with some more funky and jammy instrumentation. This track is a great example of some of the more funky elements.

I’ve been a fan of the Beatles for a while, just like everybody else. But recently, thanks in part to The Best Show on WFMU, I started exploring the solo output of the members — mostly Paul and George, since I always liked their songs best. I’d consider those two the RZA and Ghostface of the Beatles, respectively. Or, I guess, RZA and Ghostface would be the Paul and George of the Wu Tang.

This track is from Paul’s second solo album, Ram. He recorded it in the Scottish countryside with his wife Linda in 1970-71. I’ve been listening to it on repeat pretty much since I got the album a month ago. It’s so delightful.

Despite the fact that McCartney has more money than god and has been bigger than Jesus for well over 40 years, you can buy Ram here if you feel so inclined.

I half expected The Social Network to have at least one montage set to some pop punk anthem but once I recognized that David Fincher (Fight Club) directed it, I realized what a different tune I was in for. The Dust Brothers (alias of Chemical Brothers) scored Fight Club and Fincher’s consistent musical taste brings us the Golden Globe nominated film score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. Overall, a very dark appeal with traces of nostalgic hopefulness, it’s a great soundtrack to work to. Accept this friend request here

Don’t get me wrong, I love the Dougie as much as the next guy, but I feel like its starting to get a bit out of hand. NFL players are doing it, NBA players are doing it, Glee is doing it, and even teenagers wearing socks and sandals are doing it. I’m going to do a favor to CSD and recommend the title track off their new album, “The Kickback”. Appropriately named, the track features a strong kick with a hint of jerk and a dash of synth. I saw The Arcade Fire last night, as evidenced by this crummy cellular telephone photo. They opened with this song “Ready To Start” which is the hugest-sounding live song I’ve ever heard. It sounds almost as big on the record.

Sidenote: I saw the guy in the white jump suit in the photo in an upscale department store in Montreal. He was with his girlfriend, buying A LOT of shirts. Or maybe he was just carrying them to try on. I don’t know. This blog isn’t TMZ.

Curren$y is a fly-ass rapper. And he lets the listener know this a lot of times on his new record Pilot Talk. He’s not wrong though! He seems to have worked really hard doing features and making mixtapes (seven in 2008 alone) since splitting with Young Money in 2007. All of that work paid off big time on what is my favorite hip hop record of the year, so far.

The last time i read Spin Magazine, the Presidents of the United States had a spread about how the guitarist only had 3 strings. So the fact that Spin’s Prince cover compilation slipped by unnoticed is not absurd. But There is some pretty great versions of some already amazing songs on this. Here is California’s electro psych outfit Fol Chen’s version of the Beautiful Ones.

Monster Rally makes some really gosh darn pleasant music. His music is sample-based, hip-hop influenced, laid-back and tropical-sounding. Unfortunately, he only has about 20 minutes worth of music available right now. Both EPs clock in a little over 10 minutes. So, hopefully there is a full-length in the works.

A totally solid record by Mr. Oizo has got my attention (or lack thereof) for every one of these short songs on “Lambs Anger”. While most of the songs are based around a tight hook and that alone, experimentation keeps it fun and listenable but at the same time acknowledging that song is based around one riff therein; keeping it short and to the point. I compare it to a 45 minute meandering of the French nightclub radio stations (see the moments of jumpy skippyness between songs). My choice select is “Positif”. Get the rest of the album “ici” (a steal for 18 songs at $6.99).

Killer track off Manaré’s upcoming Quiet Riot EP. This beat is straight up nasty. Remember that crazy underground tribal rave scene in the sequel to The Matrix? Yeah, this is kind of like that except way, way better.

It really is a shame because had I been around I would have loved to do my white boy dance in some club to this classic babymaker from Oliver Cheatham. You know you’re doing something right when your song gets sampled 22 years later and turns into a #1 hit in the UK (“Make Luv” by Room 5). This Gucci Mane track is about how he is so rich that he can hire snipers to hang out on roofs [rooves?] – in case anybody, you know, tries to come at him.

There are some particularly good lines in this song. For example: “Gucci Man, Airtran is how I fly the hoes in”, “I pull up in a coupe/the same color as soup/and I don’t got on a suit”, and “I got money too/this what money do/my shoes come from the zoo”.

This track is from Gucci’s newest mixtape, Mr. Zone 6. Don’t stop, get it get it.

Baths is a 21 year-old beat-making prodigy from California. Normally, I wouldn’t mention the artist’s age – but this kid is younger than me, plus leagues beyond anyone I know in terms of musical talent. He does really amazing things with drum loops and the way his synths and samples sound. Great job, Baths!

A classic tune from 90′s dance trio Awesome 3. This version of the track was pulled from the recent (and totally kick-ass) XLR8R Podcast by Moby featuring all old school rave tracks. Where were you in ’92? I was 8 years old.

Mindblowing new video for Flylo‘s track “MmmHmm” off of his latest LP Cosmogramma. On another level entirely.

Appleblim and Komonazmuk transform MyMy & Emika‘s “Price Tag” into a full-on ethereal dubstep banger. The beat skitters and knocks over airy pads as the bassline slowly builds into its bouncy and ludicrously catchy peak. I’ve bumped this one on repeat more times in the last week than I’d like to admit.

Deepak Mantena writes electro music for nonthreatening crazy people. Or at the very least he is a nonthreatening crazy man. This song, like the rest of West Coast, is a frenzied collage of soothing paces, jarring melodies, and very danceable hooks. It’s like channel surfing on you’re couch and flying on a Persian carpet all at once. It is exactly like that.

Junk Culture – Daydream on Olea

This song is a slow wave. I would’ve recommended the song prior to the long weekend, but Idiot Glee deserves more isolation than offered by the claustrophobic beach real estate everyone rationed out this past holiday. James Friley’s sugar sweet melodies and drawling beats should be your companion on a far removed island with your other 4 essentials.

Idiot Glee – All Packed Up

If you haven’t noticed recently, the summer is upon us which means one thing – progressive house and trance music is back in rotation. This particular track from Welsh DJ and producer Sasha has been a favorite of mine for years for its epic buildup and sustained energy. Kind of makes me want to take a weekend trip to Ibiza sometime soon …

Sasha – Baja

This band makes freak folk sound like you’re not sick of freak folk already. The song is kind of weird, cluttered, intricate, weird, and amazing. Though aggressive, it’s also rootsy, sprialing in and out of repetitive hooks that almost have nothing to do with each other, but tie together in an incredibly fun package. Buke and Gass, a fairly loud duo, have that knack for making strange form seem accessible.

Otis Redding – Just One More Day

This song unfolds so well. The off-putting, awkward, pet-shop boys vocals sits on top of a just barely there beat, and takes its sweet time to open up into the jam that follows. It’s the minimalism that Glass Ghost gets that makes this song such a gem.

I highly recommend listening to more.

Glass Ghost – Mechanical Life

Banger of a track and a ridiculous video from DJ Wool (of The Glass). “The Dark Snuggler” drops on Beatport June 28th. Check it.

Portland, Oregon’s Menomena use a wide array instruments in their songs. This one in particular has saxophone, piano, cello and the regular stuff. I don’t know why, but the saxophone really caught me off guard —that, and the sick drum breaks.

I didn’t like Wavves‘s first two albums because I’m a crabby old man that doesn’t like when music is too fuzzy and peaked-out to understand. Fortunately, Wavves’s newest album was actually recorded in a studio instead of through a MacBook Pro’s internal microphone. As a result it’s now clear to my old-man ears that Wavves can write really fun, tight and catchy songs that are only a little fuzzy and only a little peaked-out. Also, the artwork on the new record is really neat.

HEALTH‘s single “Die Slow” has been getting some serious remix work since it dropped last year. This one from Tobacco (of Black Moth Super Rainbow notoriety) is particularly nasty. Tobacco’s characteristic analog synths and slumping beats play real nice with Jake Duzsik’s ethereal vocals. If Black Moth and HEALTH banged, this track would pop out 9 months later.

This band writes in that same vacant atmosphere that a band like Deerhunter can, leaving lots of space between the rock song, the humble electronics, and your ear.

Nine Inch Nails and Trent Reznor are endlessly interesting in his exploration of industrial / rock / and some may even include pop music (like this track). The soundscaping and textural integrity of “With Teeth” is enough for you to stand on the top of with your dark side.

Nine Inch Nails – All The Love In The World

Loving this track makes me feel predictable. Sometimes I think that all it takes is reverb-soaked piano/vocal chops over a tight beat to win my heart. That’s okay, because this is one hell of a sexy tune from producer Roof Light.

Roof Light – Heart Like An Airport Runaway

Completely bizarre/awesome video to a classic Orbital jam. Get your pacifiers and glowsticks ready kids— this is one of my all time favorite house tracks.

This is the first track from The Black Keys‘s new album Brothers. The album came out about a week ago. This song is really catchy and fun – so much so that I really wouldn’t be surprised if it ended up being a giant radio hit, or at least appears in the background of a Cadillac commercial.

The Black Keys – Everlasting Light

This song is an exercise in reservation. It is a constant back and forth between sweet, drawn back, melancholy hums, and bright and driving hooks. Mr. Gnome, a Cleveland duo, tend to lean towards pop songs with a steady force and sounds that stop and stall throughout. Everytime “Night of the Crickets” slows down to breathe, i get really excited knowing that looping chorus is around the bend.

Talk about a deep cut. I could be listening to this at my desk at work and still feel like I’m on an introspective midnight journey through empty city streets. Manchester, UK based producer Synkro makes dubstep for the soul.

Synkro – Lost For Words

I heard very early mixes of this band sometime during CMJ a couple years ago. Despite the raw recordings, i could hear the cluster of small tinkerings and sounds that Young Mammals avalanche into epic, bigger creatures. While this tune is buried under reverbed harmonies and fuzzy walls of guitar, the song stands out clear and above it all. 848 is great pop in a pool of noise.

Young Mammals – 8 4 8

One fateful day back in high school I stumbled across The Autumns in a local Worcester record store’s cheap and used bin. Both The Angel Pool and the Suicide at Strell Park EP became records that rarely ever left heavy rotation. Saying I was completely obsessed would’ve been an understatement. “Apple” is a beautifully catchy track that I’m still madly in love with over a decade later.

They’re still alive and kicking, so make sure to check them out.

The Autumns – Apple

This video is from his upcoming album, “Str8 Killa, No Filla”. The track is so good that I’m not even going to make the obvious Sum 41 joke about the album name.

From the moment the crystal glass sounds of the opening synth begin to play, effortlessly sweeping in and out of time signatures, I can’t help but think of words like “celestial”. Active Child kind of sounds like church music for a thousand years from now. The harp helps a lot too.

It’s always like finding treasure when you hear a singer/songwriter like Erik Hall writing singer/songwriter stuff that won’t sell in a coffee shop. The Way to a Monster’s Lair has that great yearn you hear in Mark Linkous, or Carter Tanton, or Neil Young, or any other man you imagine leaning over his guitar and bleeding songs out onto his scuffy basement carpet.
