Oliver Cheatham – Get Down Saturday Night

Ah, 1983 what a great year. There was uhh Nintendo going on sale in Japan and and uhh … oh wait a minute I wasn’t even alive in 1983. It really is a shame because had I been around I would have loved to do my white boy dance in some club to this classic babymaker from Oliver Cheatham. You know you’re doing something right when your song gets sampled 22 years later and turns into a #1 hit in the UK (“Make Luv” by Room 5). But enough chit chat – it’s Saturday night so go get down with your bad self.

Awesome 3 – Don’t Go (Moby Edit)

A classic tune from 90’s dance trio Awesome 3. This version of the track was pulled from the recent (and totally kick-ass) XLR8R Podcast by Moby featuring all old school rave tracks. Where were you in ‘92? I was 8 years old.

Sasha – Baja

If you haven’t noticed recently, the summer is upon us which means one thing – progressive house and trance music is back in rotation. This particular track from Welsh DJ and producer Sasha has been a favorite of mine for years for its epic buildup and sustained energy. Kind of makes me want to take a weekend trip to Ibiza sometime soon …

Otis Redding – Just One More Day

From Otis Redding’s 1966 concert at LA’s Whiskey a Go Go – this song defines Soul.

Lil Wayne – Shine (featuring The Hot Boys)

First of all, I’m honored to have the 100th post on this wonderful blog. And for the occasion I felt it was appropriate to post a song that means a lot to not just me, but the other contributors as well.

This song is Shine, by Lil Wayne and the Hot Boys.

Here’s to 100 more! But also more than that.

Orbital – Lush

Completely bizarre/awesome video to a classic Orbital jam. Get your pacifiers and glowsticks ready kids— this is one of my all time favorite house tracks.

The Autumns – Apple

One fateful day back in high school I stumbled across The Autumns in a local Worcester record store’s cheap and used bin. Both The Angel Pool and the Suicide at Strell Park EP became records that rarely ever left heavy rotation. Saying I was completely obsessed would’ve been an understatement. “Apple” is a beautifully catchy track that I’m still madly in love with over a decade later.

They’re still alive and kicking, so make sure to check them out.

Logistics – Raygun

Boston is in a state of emergency so who better to call in than [Captain] Logistics. The weapon of choice today is the Raygun and its so hot it can only be played it inside of a refrigerator.

South Circle – Attitudes (DJ Screw remix)

Recently I’ve become obsessed with chopped and screwed versions of songs. Plus, I think with all of the talk of cough syrup-related music on this blog, I feel that this DJ Screw remix of a South Circle track from ‘95 is an amazing entry into this world of slowed down and chopped up rap.

If you love this and now desire more DJ Screw, head to Bottom of the Map because they have an absurd amount of his mixtapes.

Spoon – Back to the Life (Ed Blammo Edit)

Prolong the magic of this song with the Ed Blammo edit and remember how much you love a good clap track.

Gang Starr – Above the Clouds (feat. Inspectah Deck)

A throwback for Guru of Gang Starr, who passed away today after a tough battle with cancer. This has always been one of my favorite Gang Starr tracks. R.I.P.

Tennishero – Alone (feat Chelonis R. Jones)

A dream sequence melody, subtle (yet nasty) vocals, and a fist-pumping beat? Game, set, match.

Rob Roy – Fur in my Cap

One of my fav tracks of ‘09, Rob Roy kicks it like only a half French, half Filipino rapper can do. I’d recommend turning up the bass on your sub woofer for this one.

I’d post a link to his album “King Warrior Magician Lover” but pretty sure this dude has yet to sign a deal.

Alan Braxe & Fred Falke – Love Lost

This past weekend a good friend of mine started bumping The Upper Cuts, a 2005 compilation put out by French producer Alan Braxe. Immediately I was floored – why hadn’t I heard this before? I sweat this style of classic house big time. Better late than never, and long live the low-pass filter sweep…

The Beach Boys – Little Bird

This track is off of The Beach Boys‘ fourteenth album Friends. It’s a short album with short songs. All of them but two are under three minutes.

Little Bird has the gnarliest cello breakdown I’ve ever heard. This song is begging to be sampled by an apt hip hop producer.

The Prodigy – Funky Shit

A throwback to 1997. In ‘97 I was 12 years old and I think the most important things to me at that time were Baseball and Final Fantasy VII. This track always provided a nice soundtrack to level up to. With FF XII about to come out in a few days I can honestly say that not much has changed in 13 years …

Fabolous – Right Now & Later On

I figured with my first contribution to the new site I should go with a double whammy of awesomeness. Timbaland drops a crazy beat, Fabolous kills it, and some kid in 2006 decides to cut up some anime show clips to match the lyrics [edit: There used to be a funny anime video dubbed with this song but it has since been removed, sadly]. Enjoy.

Saint Etienne – Spring (Air France Remix)

It’s been a while since I was completely obsessed with the Swedish electronic duo Air France’s No Way Down EP, which is amazing and got some serious play. This is a remix of the 1991 track “Spring” by Saint Etienne and it’s nothing short of ‘the shit’.

Lo Fidelity Allstars – Battleflag

A little throwback jam right here. I never realized just how nasty this beat was back in the day (wow, can’t believe ‘98 is already ‘back in the day’).
